Hopi Healthcare Center

The Hopi Tribe
Polacca, Arizona

This facility represents the dawn of a new age in Native American health care. Built on an undeveloped rural site, the building is a metaphor for traditional Hopi villages. Like the villages, the building's orientation is to the southeast where the maximum benefits of the winter sun can be obtained. The central corridor recalls the villages by the use of stone and a gentle deviation from orthogonal form. The interior reaches out to the desert and to the views of distant mesas. Entry to the facility is by way of heavy timbered structures that recall Hopi ramadas and the simple structures of their villages and farms.

The facility includes emergency, short-stay, birthing center, imaging, medical laboratory and pharmacy services; a large primary care area with eye care, dental care, physical therapy, speech/audiology and patient education. In addition, there is an 11-chair dialysis center, plus substance abuse and community health services.
